In December 2005, one of our students went on holiday to Nepal, and was shocked to see a martial art extremely similar to gatka. The martial art they used, has been used by them and for many years and still is being used. It was originally used to defend the village if they were attacked, the village would then come together and defend the village working as a team as shown in some of the videos. The Tharu tribe, as they are known then changed it into a dance in order to practice and maintain the art. The village only occupies around 75 people and they all attend the village hall at 7pm every day in order to practice the art. They are excellent at their grid work and everything else, the art was formally practised to the beat of a drum but know they have introduced more instruments and even singers in some. The village buy their weapons threw money donated by people who come to watch the show. The film clips show just how extremely good these people are, hope you enjoy.
